Medical devices designed to manage chronic conditions are expected to remain in the field for many years. However, semiconductor components often reach end-of-life (EOL) much earlier, creating significant challenges for manufacturers.
A leading pharmaceutical company faced this exact situation when the integrated circuit at the heart of its connected medical device was discontinued. The customer needed to secure long-term product availability while avoiding a costly redesign and regulatory requalification of the complete system.
Rather than redesigning the entire product, Presto Engineering developed a custom drop-in replacement ASIC based on its HUGIN silicon IP platform.
Leveraging silicon-proven NFC and biomedical sensor interface IP, the team delivered a fully compatible replacement from specification to volume production in just 18 months. By preserving pin compatibility and functional behavior, the new ASIC minimized design changes.
Presto also managed the complete industrialization process, from ASIC development and tape-out to production test development and ramp to volume production.
Using the HUGIN platform enabled the customer to maintain supply of its medical device without disrupting an established product line.
