This is the so-called Internet-of-Things (IoT) paradigm, which is currently the focus of the industry and its expanding at a high rate. This growing market demands sensors with increasingly better performance (e.g., resolution), increased autonomy (i.e., low power consumption), and high-speed capabilities.
